THE THREE-LEGGED STOOL
You may be wondering what this is and what it means. You’re thinking, ‘why is a Chiropractic website talking about a three-legged stool? What does it have to do with Chiropractic care?’ These are both reasonable questions.
To put it simply, the three-legged stool is an analogy for how YOU can get the best out of your chiropractic care. What would happen if you were to break one of the legs off a three-legged stool? Correct, it would fall over.
This is the same with Chiropractic care. If you’re doing two of the suggested actions, but leaving one of them out, your progress won’t develop, but would instead plateau, and maybe even decline.
This is normal however. No one’s journey, whether it’s an elite athlete like Lebron James or a patient who has been seeking Chiropractic care for years following years of low back pain, is easy. No one’s journey has NO downs.
But with that being said, there are things we can do on our journey to feeling young again to help minimise the plateaus and declines in our progress.
So, what are the three staples of the three-legged stool?
Let’s find out. (Number three is the least obvious).
1. Keeping up with your scheduled appointments
This one is probably obvious.
Following your Chiropractor’s advice is one of the legs of the three-legged stool, and is the first one we will discuss today.
Your chiropractor will give you a recommended schedule to stick to get the best results possible, and missing or delaying appointments can slow down your progress.
Missing appointments can also lead to losing your momentum, and makes things harder to change down the track. Imagine if a doctor prescribes you antibiotics for an infection, but you only take some of them, the infection might come back, or worsen.
2. Stretches and exercises
Oftentimes, there are some people who say they will do something, but they never do because they can’t be bothered. We’ve all been there. But if you really want to obtain the best results in your road to feeling young again, it’s best you actually do complete the stretches and exercises.
Chiropractic care isn’t the only thing that can reverse years of back pain, headaches, or poor posture.
Stretches will assist in mobilising, exercises will assist in strengthening and building endurance. Building the correct muscle groups to help with a reduction of muscle function leading to nagging pain can help tremendously.
This can also include using your Posture Pole
3. Reducing bad habits
More of an abstract one, this ’leg’ is KEY in your journey to feeling young.
What does it mean? Let’s use an example.
Say there’s a person who sits at a desk for majority of the day. They’ve been having back pain for years now, ever since they first started this job. The thing is, they’re not AWARE of their poor posture. They’re sitting with their head forward, back hunched over and low back curved (the wrong way).
No wonder they’ve been experiencing this pain for years. All you need to do is be aware of this.
Write ‘posture’ or ‘muscle’ on a sticky note to remind yourself. Also, try to stand up every 20-30 mins of sitting down and go for a quick walk/quick stretch.
Building a habit of this will be a huge factor in reducing and preventing pain.
To summarise, the legs of the three-legged stool should be used together. When one drops, they all drop, none working well without the others.
If you’re seeking Chiropractic care, do your absolute best to remember the three-legged stool, because who doesn’t want to feel young again?
