Headaches

Headaches are amongst the most common issues experienced by humans, with around 95% of people experiencing them at some stage in their life. A headache can vary in pain, location, occurrence and annoyance. They can be a constant irritant to some people, leading to the feelings of exhaustion and fatigue, and can ultimately be detrimental to life. A headache can make it incredibly hard to perform normal daily actions, and anyone who has headaches wishes they would not.

CAUSES OF A HEADACHE

The occurrence of a headache can have multiple causes. Such causes consist of:
Poor posture
Muscle tension
Jammed joints
Trigger points
Sleep deprivation
Diet and nutrition
Environmental factors.
At Chiropractic Health, we have a strong focus on headache relief. We understand that a headache can be very debilitating and annoying and that they can arise frequently, affecting your day. This is not how someone should live. We understand that headache relief should not be masked with pain medication, but should instead be relieved through the reduction of tension, increased mobility and a change in habits.

Types Of Headaches

There are a range of headaches that can have a different effect on people, depending on the type. Common headaches, known as a primary headache, consist of migraines, tension type headaches and cluster headache, which are 98% of all headaches. Other headaches include a sinus headache and a cervicogenic headache.

Migraines

As one of the most common and debilitating headache, migraines can impact normal living immensely. They often make people who suffer from them unable to live normally, and would instead prefer to lie in bed in pain. They are more common in middle aged females and are caused by stress, diet, poor posture and lifestyle factors, as well as environmental factors; such as the change in weather. Migraines are known for the affected to experience great pain on one side of the head and can be throbbing in nature. They are more common in females than males.

Tension-Type Headache

A tension-type headache can be described as a dull, pressure-like pain occurring around the forehead region. These headaches are common with 60-80% of people being affected by them. They can last up to 7 days, however they often do not inhibit day to day living. Causes include lack of sleep, skipping meals, stress, trigger points, poor posture and fatigue.

Cluster Headache

Cluster headaches are an extremely painful headache that occurs around one eye. They are rare and can be described as a constant, excruciating burning pain that lasts from 15 minutes to 3 hours. A cluster headache can occur daily for months and is often triggered by alcohol consumption. They are more common in males than females.

Cervicogenic Headache

A cervicogenic headache is a type of headache that arises from the base of the skull. They can refer through to the back of the head and up to the top of the skull. They may even refer to one of your eyes. These headaches can be described as a constant, dull ache. They can last for up to a week. A cervicogenic headache has a direct correlation with an issue arising from the neck, often due to stiffness and tension.

Other types of headaches include:

A sinus headache, where pain is felt in the sinuses
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) headaches, where pain is felt around the temple and cheek bones

Chiropractic treatment can be an effective alternative for different types of headaches, such as tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. If you’re looking for a drug-free way to find relief from your headache pain, chiropractic care may be right for you.

One of the most common types of headaches that we see in our office is cervicogenic headaches. These are headaches that originate from problems in the neck, which often cause neck pain and stiffness, and they can be very difficult to treat.

Chiropractic adjustments can be an effective treatment for cervicogenic headaches. By improving the movement and function of joints in the neck, we can take the pressure off of the nerves and muscles that are causing the pain. This can provide significant relief for our patients.

If you are suffering from cervicogenic headaches, we encourage you to come see us at Chiropractic Health. We will be happy to develop a treatment plan that’s specifically designed to address your needs.

During your first visit to the chiropractor, you can expect to:

Discuss your health history and current symptoms
Undergo a physical examination, including orthopaedic and neurological testing, as well as range of motion and joint play testing
Have x-rays taken (if necessary)
Be given a specific and individualised plan of action

The success rate of chiropractic care for headaches varies from person to person. In general, however, chiropractic care is a very effective treatment for headache disorders. If you suffer from headaches, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. Our chiropractors would be more than happy to perform an assessment to see if they can help you

While over-the-counter medication can be effective in treating headaches, it is important to use them sparingly. This is because these medications can have negative side effects if they are used too frequently. Some of the most common side effects include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea and dizziness.

Additionally, dependence on headache painkillers can result in rebound headaches, which are actually caused by the withdrawal from the medication. This is why it is always best to consult with a chiropractor who can offer a long-term solution pain relief.

In addition to chiropractic adjustments, there are a number of other natural ways to treat headaches. Whether you’ve got a tension headache or a migraine headache, the following are some examples of helpful alternatives you can try to reduce headache pain:

Stress reduction techniques
Supplements like magnesium and omega-3 fatty acids
Getting better sleep
Drinking more water

All of these natural therapies can be extremely effective in treating headaches, and many of them can be done in conjunction with chiropractic care.
